John Oates joined our exclusive Five Timers Club with his appearance on the show today and chose the Big Wakeup Call coffee mug as his special gift. John is hosting a special event, “Oates Song Fest,” featuring a lineup of superstar performers, to benefit Feeding America. You can see “Oates Song Fest” on March 20, 2021 at 7:00 Central on nugs.net.Follow @bigwakeupcall
John Oates is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and The Big Wakeup Call 4 Timers Club! John called us up to announce a new Darryl Hall and John Oates tour, which comes to Chicago on July 18th at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheater. We discussed putting together a set list, dealing with downtime on tour, and touring with their special guests Squeeze. John also may or may not have announced the existence of “Maneater” underwear at their merch table.Follow @bigwakeupcall
it was great to have John Oates return to the show, this time to talk about his fun new Christmas single, “Santa Be Good to Me,” which features a fun, modern lyric backed with a traditional-style holiday tune. We discussed working with an amazing studio band like the Time Jumpers, how working with a tight established band differs from working with an assembled group of studio musicians, our love of vinyl, and what we’re going to read in his upcoming memoir to be released next year.Follow @bigwakeupcall
It was an honor to talk to Rock and Roll Hall-of-Famer John Oates about his new TV special, “Another Good Road,” airing Saturday night at 8 Central on Palladia and also available as part of a DVD/CD set. We discussed the origins of the project, getting back to his roots and blues influences, his rhythm guitar playing (very underrated — it’s stellar), and how his songwriting royalty checks might be slightly larger than mine. John is also coming to City Winery in Chicago for a show on February 10th.
