Ray Parker Jr.

Singer, songwriter, guitarist and producer Ray Parker Jr. is featured in the new documentary “Hired Guns: Out of the Shadow, Into the Spotlight,” which is in theaters tomorrow night (6/29/17) for one night only.  We discussed the beginning of his career as a teenage session guitarist, getting a call from Stevie Wonder, and recording his first solo album in the middle of the night.

Rudy Sarzo

Rudy Sarzo has been a member of Whitesnake, Quiet Riot, and Dio.  He toured with Ozzy Osbourne.  He’s currently playing with The Guess Who.  We discussed his impressive resume and the role of the so-called “hired gun” with his appearance in the new documentary “Hired Gun: Out of the Shadows and Into the Spotlight.”  Plus: Rudy and I form a power trio with Mick Fleetwood and Rudy helps me go beyond root and fifth.

Mark Slaughter

Mark Slaughter’s new solo album is “Halfway There.”  He’ll be performing with Slaughter coming up on August 12th at the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles.   We talked about the writing and recording of the new album, the challenges and advantages of being a one-man band, and the constant search for honesty in music.

Chris D’Elia called in to chat about his new comedy special, “Man on Fire,” which premieres today (6/27/17) on Netflix.  We discussed saying goodbye to a set of material, how promotion is part of the gig for a comedian, and how to best enjoy live comedy in a club.

Legendary drummer Liberty DeVitto called in to chat about his appearance in a new documentary, “Hired Guns.”  We talked about his work with Billy Joel, the greatness of Ringo Starr, and messing up onstage in front of 19,000 people.  Plus: insider drummer discussions of paradiddles and buzz rolls.

Jason Simos

Jason Simos is the U.S. representative of the “Peter Sellers Appreciation Society” and called in to talk about a new 6-disc Blu-ray set: “The Pink Panther Film Collection starting Peter Sellers.”  We also discussed Peter Sellers’ career, legacy, and connection to the Beatles.

Bill McCormick from the World News Center called in to chat about Dwayne Johnson in Shazam, yet another Spider-Man movie, and why he hopes we don’t see a found footage superhero horror movie.  Plus: more great news on MS research and other things that made this segment “really gooder.”

Dara Torres

5-time Olympian swimmer Dara Torres called in to talk about her battle with psoriasis and the “Show More of You” campaign.  She was joined by Dr. Shane Chapman, who shared information about psoriatic diseases.

Meredith Vieira

Meredith Vieira (who has only 14 more Emmy awards than I do) called in to reminisce about our close, close friendship and to talk about her role as spokesperson for postmenopausal osteoporosis.  Meredith was joined by UCLA orthopedic surgeon Dr. Susan Bukata, who talked about the connection between fractures and postmenopausal osteoporosis and a new available treatment option.

 

Rick Ernst

Rick Ernst is the producer and director of “Get Thrashed: The Story of Thrash Metal,” which is now out on DVD in a special encore edition.  We discussed the evolution of thrash metal, being a part of the “zine” scene (and how Lars Ulrich referred to it as the “Internet of the ’80s), and why many of the thrash metal albums sound timeless (hint: no gated snare drum).
