Ricky Whittle called in to talk about the premiere of “American God” on Starz. We discussed the challenges of making a series based on a book, bringing the character of Shadow Moon to life, and why he hates coin tricks.
Note: due to a gremlin in the phone line (most likely the ’70s AMC vehicle haunting me), there’s a bit of a buzz, but it was a good conversation worth listening to.
World News Center Bureau Chief Bill McCormick called in to talk about a great new contest for independent musicians, “Battle of the Garage Bands,” sponsored by the fine folks at LiftMaster. We chatted about the details of the promotion and shared stories of bad club gigs. Also, due to some phone issues, I’ll finally get to use the Command-D function in Final Draft (for dual/overlapping dialogue) when this segment is eventually made into a web series.
Lori Petty called in to chat about the 25th anniversary edition of “A League of Their Own,” now out on Blu-Ray and Digital HD. We talked about her versatile film career (appearing in films with Janet Jackson, Madonna, Ice-T, Ice Cube and Tupac!), watching yourself from 20 years ago when you’re beautiful and naked, and why I should upgrade from VHS.
One of the greatest sentences ever spoken to me in my life happened just before this interview: “Ryan, I’ve got Michael Nesmith on the line for you.” It was an absolute thrill to chat with Mike about his new book, “Infinite Tuesday: An Autobiographical Riff.”
Julian Lennon called in to talk about his new children’s book, “Touch the Earth.” We discussed the book’s positive environmental message, his faith in children to help take care of the planet, his White Feather Foundation, and how this book came from a very special and personal experience.
The Movie Man called in with his thoughts on “The Fate of the Furious” and “Spark: A Space Tail.” Also, after Twitter went crazy about our tour of The Movie Man’s freezer and pantry, next week we’ll explore his closets and clean out his car. Don’t miss it!
Lindsay Arnold is the dance partner of Grandpa David Ross on “Dancing With the Stars.” We discussed David’s surprisingly agile moves, how they’ve bonded as a team, and how she was blinded by the 108 diamonds on David’s World Series ring.
Bill McCormick called in for another interesting, informative, and entertaining chat. I assume. This description was written before the segment to save time. Update: a warning about Internet scams and a discussion of Mary Magdalene and St. Peter.
Felicia Day is starring as Kinga Forrester(the daughter of the evil Dr. Clayton Forrester) on the new Mystery Science Theater 3000, which premieres with 14 new episodes on Netflix this Friday (4/14/17). We talked (of course) about our love for the original series, how the series is faithful to the old while introducing new elements, and what it’s like to have Patton Oswalt as her loyal henchman.
I had a great time talking to Kelly Rowland about her fun (and very useful) new book “Whoa, Baby! A Guide for New Moms Who Feel Overwhelmed and Freaked Out (and Wonder What the #*$& Just Happened).” I wish I had this book 20 months ago when my daughter was born.
